DEFINE
Challenges

A developer approached me to redesign his app. In addition to improving the interface and the user experience, I suggested that he consider other changes that could directly impact to improve the activation, retention and revenue.

After analyzing the app, I realized that Heuristics Laws and Visual Principles are not applied.

During the usability test, I observed that users did not show interest in the events. They didn’t access to view more information about the plan nor even keep it as favourite.

This suggested, that users do not find useful or enjoyable the app.

Solution

After, developing an analysis of the app and users test. I proposed three goals to achieve.

  • Improve the app interface and user experience. After analyzing the app, I realized that Heuristics Laws and Visual Principles are not applied.

  • Increase activation and retention of the app. During the usability test, I observed that users did not show interest in the events. They didn’t access to view more information about the plan nor even keep it as favourite.

  • Generate revenue. Currently, the app does not produce income. I propose to adding non-free cultural plans to generate revenue, while keeping most of the free plans, as the main objective is to offer free options.

PlanMad

PlanMad is an app which offers free cultural plans in Madrid City. This app gets all the information from an API of the Madrid Council.

All the plans that are offered through the app are organized by different cultural or social centres, libraries, museums, theatres…

Currently, the app shows the date, place and resume of the different events.

Also, it allows the users to save events as favourites and receive a notification when the plan is scheduled. This app localized the event on the map too.

Research

To gain a better understanding of the target audience of the app, I conducted a Usability Test with users and created the User persona.

Usability Test

Before redesign the app, I carried out a Usability Test with 5 Users. Participants between 25 to 60 years old living in Spain.

Methodology:

  • Time: 5-10 minutes.

  • Location: Remote.

  • Type: Moderate Usability study.

Tasks:

  • Prompt 1: Explore the events and choose the one that fits your schedule? Did you finish the task?

  • Prompt 2: Explore the events and select a painting event. How easy or difficult was this task to complete?

  • Prompt 3: Explore the event you have choosen. Have you found all the information about the event?

  • Prompt 4: Explore all the events schedule for today After exploring all the events, have you kept oat least one as favourite?

Results

  • Prompt 1: 2/5 participant have had problems choosing the event thar fits their schedule. “I would like to choose weekend plans”

  • Prompt 2:  3/5 participants have had problems choosing a painting event. “More than one event have the same picture”

  • Prompt 3: 3/5 participant did not find the information they need about the event and 2/5 access to the original event page. “I miss a resume of the event or what is it about”

  • Prompt 3: 2/5 participant have kept at least one event as favourite.

Persona

Marcos travels to Madrid every month, but he doesn’t have a lot of time and money to spend on cultural activities. He works freelance, so he needs to be efficient with his time. Additionally, he stays in a different hotel each time he visits the city.

Conclusion

The original idea of this app was very interesting. PlanMad offers free cultural plans in Madrid City. This app gets all the information from an API of the Madrid Council.

This app was developed by a developer, without the assistance of a UX/UI designer.

To improve the app, I conducted a usability test with real users to learn how they interacted with it.

After I got the results, I started working on the redesign, taking into account the Visual Principles, Heuristics Laws and other changes to enhance the app's activation, retention and revenue.

The next step will be to carry out a usability test with the new app when the developer develops the new version.
